●政治家のスローガンは掛け声倒れに終わることも多い. Many are the political slogans that start with a roar and end with a whimper.
●主役の登場に客席から掛け声がかかった. When the leading star came on there were enthusiastic yells from the audience [fans yelled enthusiastically from the audience].
●漕ぎ手は掛け声に合わせて漕いだ. The rowers timed their strokes with shouts [yelled at each stroke, shouted in rhythm to their strokes].
●掛け声をかける 〔役者・選手に〕 cheer 《a favorite player》; yell [shout] enthusiastically; yell encouragement; 〔どっこいしょと〕 make noises of self-encouragement; give a grunt when making an effort; 〔いちにのさんと〕 concert action (with rhythmical shouts); say [shout] “one, two, three, go! [heave ho!].”
●彼らは掛け声勇ましくその重い石を動かした. Shouting rhythmically, they moved the heavy stone.
・「さあ帰ろう」と掛け声ばかりでなかなか立ち上がらない. They just talk about leaving without doing it. | They talk about going home but they just sit there.
・掛け声とともに一斉に走り出した. With a shout [yell], they were off.
・その構想は結局掛け声だけに終わった. In spite of all the fanfare, nothing came of the new idea.
